One of the most visited attractions in southern Vietnam is the War Museum in Saigon, also known as the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City. The hard and bloody war with the USA left deep scars in the history of Vietnam. Even after so many years, just looking at the photos can be heart-wrenching. The Military Museum in Saigon is a place where visitors can learn more about the history of the country and see exhibits from the Vietnam War.

History of the Saigon War Museum
The museum opened on September 4, 1975, under the name “Exhibition House for US and Puppet Regime Crimes” (translated as the “Exhibition House of the USA and the Puppet Regime of Violence”). After 15 years, the name was changed to a less provocative one: “Museum of War Crimes and Aggression.” The final and current name, the War Remnants Museum, was adopted in 1995.

The museum is divided into 13 thematic exhibitions, each covering a specific aspect or period of the Vietnam War. Particular emphasis is placed on archival photographs accompanied by captions explaining the events.

Key Sections of the Museum
While it is difficult to describe all the exhibits in detail, for me, the museum is divided into three key parts:
- Outdoor Exhibit of Weapons and Military Equipment:
This section displays various military vehicles, including tanks, helicopters, and fighter jets used during the war.

- Main Building with the Photo Archive:
The main part of the museum features a comprehensive photo archive alongside displays of weapons and artifacts. The captions provide valuable historical context, offering insight into the events of the war.

- Prison Section:
A small but emotionally heavy part of the museum, this section recreates the “tiger cages” used to hold prisoners of war. This exhibit can be particularly difficult to view due to its graphic depiction of the harsh conditions faced by prisoners.

Conclusion
The War Museum in Saigon is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Ho Chi Minh City. It offers an eye-opening experience that provides a new perspective on the resilience of the Vietnamese people and their history. You are certain to leave with a strong and lasting impression.
