History Slavgorod (Slaugarad) begins in 1945, it was then that the settlement received the status of a city and its current name. However, the place itself is much older, and the first chronicle mentions go back to the distant year 1136. An important location of Slavgorod is the old Castle Hill fortification, which is located on the steep bank of the Sozh River. If you look closely, you can see where the Pronya River flows into the Sozh.
It was from this river that the original name of the city came - “Propoisk” (originally - Proposhask, Prupoy, Proporsk).
The history of the castle in Slavgorod dates back to 1518 and was apparently used as a defensive structure until the first half of the 18th century. The fortress was wooden and occupied an area of about 4000 m2. No detailed information has been preserved about what the castle in Propoisk looked like, but historians agree that there were wooden towers along the edges, and a drawbridge led into the fortress itself.
When Prince Golitsin began to rule Slavgorod, the castle lost its defensive functions and was increasingly rebuilt. The last traces and reminders of him disappeared in 1938.
Today there is a local park on the site, where there is a memorial stone with a brief history of the city and general information about Slavgorod. In front of the entrance to the castle hill there is a small brick gate and an art object in the form of chess.
The territory of the park is landscaped and neat, it is clear that local residents love to spend their free time here.
Below is a point marking the place where this landmark of Slavgorod is located:
In the city it will also be interesting to see the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and find an unusual tower, which is believed to be part of the Golitsyn estate.
