Outdoors Engels 1, probably located the oldest building in Minsk. Back in the distant 1640-1650s, a residential building of the Basilian Monastery was built here. It is assumed that the construction was carried out on the foundations of old Gothic houses of the 16th century.
Monastery of the Basilians operated until 1795. After another 4 years, the Orthodox Peter and Paul Monastery was located here.
At the beginning of the 19th century, there was a rather devastating fire, so the buildings of the monastery were rebuilt. By the end of the century, the old building ceases to be religious; ordinary housing is located here.
Interesting fact: once the buildings of the monastery were connected by a passage with church of the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, the passage has not survived. Now these two buildings are connected only by music. Today, a music school operates in the former Basilian convent, and a children's philharmonic society operates in the church.
In Soviet times, the building was stripped of its unusual architecture and given the classic look of a hostel. However, in the late 90s, early 2000s, the appearance of one of the oldest buildings was restored Minsk.
