In an urban village Velyka Berestovitsa is a unique landmark of the region - Ruins of the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. The history of this temple begins in the first half of the 17th century. When Jerome Chodkiewicz financed the construction of a Carmelite monastery.
Probably the first version of the church was made of wood. However, some sources indicate that the temple was originally built of stone.
In 1741 year church in Berestovitsa, significantly rebuilt on the old foundations. The appearance of the temple, which can be seen today, was formed just at that time. The church is three-day, with 2 low sacristies, made in baroque architecture. The facade is conditionally divided into 3 parts, the pediment is distinguished by a round niche. Pilasters are well preserved at the level of the third tier.
In 1866, the church was transferred to the Orthodox Church. Local residents actively tried to return the temple, or to obtain permission to build another. However, they did not succeed.
Interesting fact: residents of Bolshaya Berestovitsa actively supported the uprising of Kastus Kalinovsky. There is an assumption that the first issues of the legendary underground newspaper “Muzhytskaya Pravda” were printed in the cellars of this church.
The church has been closed since 1960 and has not been used. During this time, the roof collapsed.
In 1990, the temple was returned to believers, but it was not possible to restore it. The church in Bolshaya Berestovitsa is mothballed and continues to await reconstruction.
Another attraction of the urban village - Neo-Gothic Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
In addition to Bolshaya Berestovitsa, there is Malaya. There you can see orthodox church and a church. More interesting places in Belarus on the map.
