In the 60s of the last century, it was released on cinema screens film “Through the Cemetery”, based on the story of the same name by Pavel Nilin. It’s interesting to watch the film even today to see gorgeous shots of Minsk (the “Lower” market, Kalvaria flashes here). There are interesting shots outside the capital, so the film begins with a scene where the ruins are clearly visible Mir Castle.
Directors have repeatedly chosen this location for filming films, for example in “Three fun shifts“There are even shots taken from the air.
It’s interesting that “Through the Cemetery” begins and ends with the village of Mir; perhaps there is some symbolism in this. In the last minutes of the films, the viewer is shown a glimpse chapel-tomb of Svyatopolk-Mirsky. At the time of filming, there was a granary within the walls of this chapel.
An experienced viewer will probably be able to identify some other places Belarus, which are shown in the film. However, to be honest, it is the footage of Minsk that I want to see most of all.
Kalvariyskoe Cemetery recognizable immediately; the massive gate at the entrance leaves no doubt. The same scenes contain footage filmed inside the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, which was abandoned at that time.
The most gorgeous shots are, of course, those where you can see the Low Market, the old Nemiga and Peter and Paul Cathedral.
It is almost impossible to recognize modern Nemiga; it was this part of the city that in the late 60s would be rebuilt beyond recognition.
As I wrote above, watching “Through the Cemetery”, you can notice not only the aforementioned Minsk and Mir, there are also plenty of scenes with unidentified places in Belarus. There are shots where you can see elements of some abandoned estate, a large village with ordinary buildings, an ancient cemetery and much more.
