History

Victory Square in Minsk (originally called Round square) began to form in the late 1930s. It was at this time that two arched houses began to be erected, designed by the architect Roman Stoller. Only the Great Patriotic War prevented them from completing their construction. They were completed in the late 40s.

Victory Square in Minsk received its modern name in 1954. This is directly related to the construction monumentа Victory (It was dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the liberation of Minsk). This monument is dedicated to the soldiers of the Red Army and partisans who died during the Second World War. In the early 1950s, the formation of the architectural ensemble of the square continued: along Independence Avenue (formerly known as Stalin Avenue), six more buildings were built according to the designs of architects M. Barshch and the Aranauskas brothers.

It was lit by Major General Burdeyny, Hero of the Soviet Union. In the early 1980s granite blocks were added to the composition of the Victory monument, on which inscriptions dedicated to the hero cities were engraved.

  1. A beautiful place, and its main value is perpetuating the memory of heroes. The Great Patriotic War must remain in every heart as a terrible event. It is unfortunate that many republics of the former Soviet Union forgot about this, remade history and consigned to oblivion the memory of their heroes, real, not invented.

  2. I will say that the Minsk authorities really tried and created a beautiful memo in honor of the soldiers, the defenders of the city, and also with a very easy way to the metro station square under the square and a small memorial hall. Walking around the square, you can see and read hundreds of names of the dead heroes, then you really think about the essence of your life.

  3. Still, it's good that such a historical and memorable event is immortalized by the Victory Monument. And being in the center of Belarus will not let the descendants forget about the heroic feat of the heroes who defended their homeland.
