Meadows - This is a rather ancient settlement, the first written mention of which dates back to the first half of the 16th century, as the possession of the Sapieha family. Since the 18th century, Meadows have already passed to Valerian Jabu, under which PR monastery. The monks of this order also had their collegiums in Polotsk, Shchuchin и Lida. Thanks to PR and financial support of Valerian, in 1744 year construction work begins Church of St. Michael the Archangel.
The work took more than 10 years and ended in 1756 year.
The PR monastery in Luzhki was forcibly closed after the defeat of the 1830 uprising. In 1843, the temple was converted into an Orthodox church (on the territory of Belarus, churches were massively reconsecrated in churches after the uprising of 1863).
Architecture St. Michael's Church is a unique monument not only for the Vitebsk region and the region, but for the whole country. Firstly, the temple is a prime example Vilna Baroque, and secondly - the only example of a church whose towers are not located in the same plane, but rotated diagonally.
The towers themselves are four-tiered, where all the tiers have different sizes and decorations.
Outwardly, the church in Luzhki seems huge, but getting inside you are surprised at its rather compact size. Single-nave, with an elongated semicircular apse, completed by two small sacristies.
Interesting paintings and ornamental elements have been preserved in the temple; there are choirs right above the entrance. Another architectural feature of the Luzhskov church is the almost complete absence of narthex (porch, vestibule).
After the Second World War, the former PR church was closed, and within its walls, according to the traditions of the Soviet government, a warehouse of mineral fertilizers was organized. According to the stories of locals, icons and statues were taken out of the church, which are now in the Polotsk Museum. The temple was returned to believers in 1988, at about the same time this attraction received the status of an architectural monument.
This unique church is located a little away from the center of the agro-town of Luzhki, but it is a dominant and is clearly visible from afar.
In Luzhki you can also see Church of the Nativity of the Virgin and the ruins of a synagogue. Nearby is a massive Neo-Gothic church in the village of Mnuto-2 и the only cave in Belarus.
