The Common Bunting (Emberiza citrinella) is a brightly colored bird with a dominant yellow color, slightly larger in size than the Tree Sparrow. In Belarus, this species is found throughout the country, including in winter.
Females and males are similar; they can be distinguished by the richness of their color. In males, the abdomen and head have a pronounced yellow-lemon color. Young birds are without yellowness and from a distance very much resemble sparrows.
The bunting is clearly visible in the spring, when the males begin to call and the females begin to build nests. Interestingly, they do this in the ground or at the base of bushes. There are usually two broods of chicks per year - in mid-spring and towards the end of summer.
The basis of the diet of Emberiza citrinella is various seeds, exceptions are made for the chicks of which are fed, among other things, insects.
Buntings are most easily seen in fields and forests near livestock farms. Birds gather in large flocks and wander from place to place in search of food.
