Probably Jews in Chechersk, in the middle of the 18th century, invited Zakhary Chernyshev, the then owner of the place. According to the inventory list and plans of the settlement in 1763, one can find information about 5 Jewish prayer houses. However, the building that can be seen today was built in 1800 year.

Where was the synagogue in Chechersk

What form and architecture the synagogue was originally, unfortunately, is unknown. Now it is a two-story brick house, with a small set of decorative elements (the first floor has interesting inserts in the form of pointed arches).

In the first half of the 20th century, the number of Jews in Chechersk was declining. Young people actively moved to large cities - Gomel, Mogilev. Therefore, at the time of the occupation, the total number of inhabitants of Jewish origin was already only 200 people (for reference, in 1926 there were about 1300 Jews).

The former synagogue is on the street Proletarian 27, near the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior.

In Chechersk it will also be interesting to see the ancient town hall and Chernyshev-Kruglikov estate.
