The palace and park complex in Gomel includes not only palace, but also several more independent attractions, including - Chapel-tomb of the Paskevichs. It was built at the end of the 19th century and belongs to the so-called “Russian style”, somewhat reminiscent of Orthodox religious buildings of the 17th-18th century.
The architectural design of the chapel itself also looks unusual: the first floor is made in the shape of a square. The roof is a high tent, which is crowned with a neat onion-shaped dome. The same bulbs are located in the corners of the tomb.
The tomb in Gomel became the last refuge for many representatives of a noble family, including Field Marshal Paskevich himself. The idea of building the chapel belonged to the son of a famous general, who took possession of the Gomel Palace in the mid-19th century.
The decoration of the chapel-tomb is also striking. The decoration used carved stone, unusual metals, red terracotta, mosaics, and wall paintings.
Every detail, every little thing was thought out by the architects. The steps and base of the chapel with the tomb are made of granite. The altar table and the inside of the plinth are made of labradorite, another table is made of marble. One of the walls of the tomb has preserved a mosaic panel from the late 19th century. The facades of the chapel are decorated with colorful tiles with ancient Russian ornaments.
In the underground crypt there were many icons, bronze candlesticks and lamps, wreaths made of silver and porcelain on tombstones and other decorations. The 20th century left a deep scar in the history of this tomb chapel. After the revolution of 1917, the chapel was looted. The chapel was also seriously damaged during the Second World War.
In the middle of the 20th century, a decision was made to give the status of an architectural monument of Republican significance. After this, a period of restoration work began.
The tomb is located next to the palace and Peter and Paul Cathedral, below is a point with the location on the map:
If you are in these parts, I recommend planning a trip to the city Chechersk.
