In the suburbs of Slonim, Albertine, next door to Church of the Virgin Mary you can see the Orthodox church and the building of the former Jesuit monastery. This attraction is unique in its own way. Here, in the first half of the 20th century, the Jesuit monks tried to return the Uniate Church to the people. The money for the construction of their small monastery was partially provided to them by the owner of the local homesteads - Count Puslovsky.
The active work of the monks was carried out from 1920 to 1939. In 1942, their activities were completely banned by the German occupation administration of Slonim. In addition, apparently, the population did not particularly warmly welcome the idea of returning the union (Brest Union of 1596).
The church and the monastery were built before 1933, the old photograph shows the original architecture of these buildings.
It can be seen how much the temple was rebuilt, but much more significant changes occurred with the monastery building. The complex pitched roof with an attic was gone, the second floor was completed.
In the old photograph, a part of the sculpture on a high pedestal is still visible. It has not reached our days, but the pedestal itself, although reduced, is in place. Surely in Soviet times there was a statue of some pioneer or leader of the proletariat on it.
After the end of World War II, the entire complex was given over to the needs of the Albertinsky orphanage. Then the buildings were used as a hostel, an elementary school and even a center for a young tourist.
Under Church of St. Athanasius of Brest in 1991, part of the building where the sports hall was located was transferred. Over time, the temple was restored and betrayed to him the appearance that can be seen today. True, the dome on the tower has changed at least three times over the past 30 years (from flat to bulbous).
Finding this attraction in Slonim will not be difficult. The temple is located on Voykov Street, below is a mark on the map:
In the historical part of the city, I recommend visiting old synagogue и Church of St. Andrew the Apostle.
